Surrey Schools Picture Book of the Year: Let the Reading Begin!
This year, primary students will dive into all 20 nominated titles for the Surrey Schools Picture Book of the Year (SSPBOY) and Narrative Nonfiction Book of the Year nomiees during their library classes. After exploring these incredible stories, students will cast their votes for their favourite book. The district-wide winner will be revealed in June—so stay tuned! Which picture book will capture the hearts of young readers and take home the #SSPBOY and #SSNNBOY Award?

Surrey Schools Narrative Nonfiction Book of the Year Nominees
WInners of the Surrey Schools Book of the Year Programs 2023-2024.
Votes are collected from participating elementary school library programs in the district.
Classes will read all 10 books and vote for their favourite. We rate the picture book based on story, illustrations, if it is fun to read/listen to and if we can connect with the story.
This is the 7th year of the SSNNFBOY Program at Surrey Centre! Narrative Nonfiction books, also known as literary nonfiction, are true stories written in the style of a fiction picture book. The narrative nonfiction genre contains real facts that is written in a compelling way—facts told as a story. We keep all our narrative nonfiction together in the picture book section.
A selection of 10 outstanding current novels from different genres for students in grades 4 to 7. To vote students must read at least 2 of the nominees. Some of the books are also available as eBooks through Destiny Discover with your Surrey Schools username and password. Come by the learning commons and use a checklist to record the books read.
